TODAY'S MIDWEST INTERURBAN CONNECTIONS

Because most of the urban areas in the Midwest remain separated by significant areas of rural land, very few present day transit systems actually connect with other transit systems in adjacent metropolitan areas.

If one is not so adventurous, most of this journey can be made using Wisconsin Coach Lines from Waukesha through Milwaukee to Kenosha, and Metra and NICTD (South Shore Line) commuter trains from Kenosha through Chicago to South Bend. Wisconsin Coach Lines is unique in that it is strictly an interurban and commuter bus line, serving Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin. The company remains privately owned, though now part of Coach USA.

The South Shore Line is generally regarded as "America's Last Interurban". But the line more closely resembled a heavy commuter railroad line than in interurban railroad. Thus, this journey included local bus routes as far as possible.
