UNION PACIFIC

Joliet Subdivision/Pequot Subdivision

(Used by Amtrak's St. Louis trains)

Between Chicago and Joliet, trains use the same Canadian National (former Gulf Mobile & Ohio, later Illinois Central Gulf) trackage as used by Metra's Heritage Corridor. South of Joliet is Union Pacific trackage once part of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio. Between Joliet and Mazonia, trains may use either of two routes. Trains more often use a route to the east, via Wilmington. But trains also regularly use the Pequot Subdivision route to the west, via Coal City, and a paired track with the Santa Fe (now BNSF) southwest of Joliet. At Mazonia interlocking switch, the route via Wilmington is the straight route, while the route via Coal City is the diverging route. The route via Wilmington passes by Commonwealth Edison's Braidwood nuclear power plant, the plant is also visible to the east from the Pequot Subdivision.

TRACK DIAGRAM

All main tracks are shown for the Joliet Subdivision and Pequot Subdivision, along with most switches within interlockings, and other tracks used by main line Amtrak and freight trains. Not shown are hand operated industrial switches.

Information is subject to change, and is based on observations, along with information from employee timetables.

The following colors are used to indicate types of operation:
BLUE - manual interlocking
RED - centralized traffic control (CTC) or bidirectional signals
GREEN - automatic block signals
BLACK - unsignaled

Thin lines across tracks indicate signals. In CTC or bidirectional signal territory, signals usually exist for both directions at all locations, except at interlockings where the signals usually are only in the direction entering the interlocking.
