CSX TRANSPORTATION

Grand Rapids Subdivision

(Used by Amtrak's Pere Marquette)

West of Porter IN (CP 482), Amtrak trains use the main line now owned by Norfolk Southern. The line from Porter to Grand Rapids was part of the Pere Marquette Railway, which subsequently became part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and now CSX. Trackage rights have always been used west of Porter on the former New York Central line, as far as Pine Jct. Until 1971, Pere Marquette and C&O passenger trains used the former Baltimore and Ohio route northwest of Pine Jct., serving Grand Central Station until 1969 and Northwestern Station from 1969 until 1971. A route considerably more circuitous than Amtrak's present NS routing.

PERSONAL NOTE: - When I first learned that the passing siding near Fennville was identified as "Wells", I was intrigued. Because my great grandfather had the last name Wells, and for many years he was the operator/agent at the station in Fennville. In the mid 1970's, I wrote to the Chesapeake and Ohio headquarters about it. And the railroad was able to confirm, that the siding was indeed named after my great grandfather. Bill Vandervoort.
