TRANSIT SYSTEMS IN RHODE ISLAND

PRESENT AND PAST

ORGANIZED BY METROPOLITAN AREAS AND COUNTIES

A small urban Northeastern state, which is appropriately supportive of public transportation.

METROPOLITAN AREAS

Beginning in 1902, the Rhode Island Co. was owned by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, which operated nearly all main line passenger trains within the state. One company was thus able to control nearly the entire public transportation system within Rhode Island. This was similar to the Connecticut Co. in neighboring Connecticut. But the Rhode Island Co. remained in existance only until 1921.
