A small urban Northeastern state, which is appropriately supportive of public transportation.
In Boston and eastern Massachusetts, the Boston Elevated Railway emerged as the main operator of public transportation within Boston and certain nearby suburbs. While the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway emerged as the main operator of public transportation outside Boston. In addition there was a Middlesex & Boston Street Railway, and those three companies eventually became the publicly owned Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway was formed in 1911 as the Bay State Street Railway Co., renamed in 1919. The Bay State Street Railway Co. was formed out of the merger of the Boston & Northern Street Railway, operating north of Boston, and the Old Colony Street Railway Co., operating south of Boston. Over the years, many Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway operating divisions were consolidated or abandoned, with many areas eventually served by agencies other than the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The only present Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus garages in the former Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway territory, are in Lynn and in Quincy.
